How Can I Level My Garden Bed Properly?

I'm trying to level my garden bed, which has a wooden bottom with drainage holes. I was thinking about putting down soil and then covering it with mulch to even out the ground. But now I'm having second thoughts—will the soil and mulch shift when it rains, making the bed unstable? I attached a photo to show how uneven the ground is without the soil and mulch, and I do think it looks a little better once I put them down. Any advice?

It sounds like a good plan to level the stones first! Since your box has a bottom, I would recommend placing it on concrete or gravel instead of just dirt or mulch. If it’s too uneven underneath, your garden bed won't sit right when filled with soil, which can get super heavy. But don't stress about getting it *perfectly* level; a little height difference is totally normal. If it helps you, you can always adjust the soil level inside the box later after it's filled.

Setting your garden bed on stone pavers is the way to go! Just lay them down and use a long 2x4 to check for level—instead of just eyeballing it. If you need to adjust the pavers to get it spot on, do that before putting down the box. Once everything’s leveled nicely, just set the box on top and double-check it for level again!
