How Can I Lock My Manual Up-and-Over Garage Door for Access from Both Sides?

Hey folks! So, my mom's old up-and-over garage door isn't working with the opener anymore, so we've gone back to using it manually. I need a locking solution where if someone locks the door from the outside, a person inside can still unlock and open it, and vice versa. I was considering a 90-degree hasp and staple, but I worry that if it gets locked from the outside, it could be a fire hazard if someone is inside. Does anyone have any ideas on how to achieve this?

Consider just getting a standard garage door lock kit that has everything you need. You can find options that allow for locking from both the inside and outside. Just pick up a decent one from your hardware store or online, and you’ll be good to go!

Yeah, I found a good one on Amazon that allows you to do just that. Just do a quick search, and you’ll see plenty of options!

You might want to check for a garage door slide lock with a key. It's a neat option that allows easy operation from the inside, and it can be fitted with a T-handle or lever on the outside, so you can lock and unlock it from both sides. Much safer than the hasp option!

Totally agree! It's a simple solution and saves you from risking safety with more complicated locking mechanisms.
