How Can I Lock My Sliding Wardrobe Doors?

Asked By CraftyGiraffe84 On

I made two sliding wardrobe doors that slightly overlap, and I'm looking for a way to securely lock them. I was thinking about drilling a hole through them to install a lock that expands at the end, similar to a bolt that shoots out and retracts with a key. I'm wondering if something like that exists? I also looked into plunger locks, but they won't work because my doors are only 22mm thick and there's an 18mm gap between them. The ratchet locks used in glass cabinets seem unsuitable for wider spaces too. Any suggestions?

You might want to check out a bypass door lock, like this one from Rockler. It’s designed for overlapping doors, but just make sure to verify the dimensions since it might not reach your required 18mm gap. Also, the Grainger one looks promising too—definitely a good option to explore! ?

Thanks for the lead! I see that it's 22mm long, but it only extends to 32mm, so I'm worried it won't cover the gap between my doors. Do you have any other ideas?

Those locks look really solid! I think I'm leaning towards that Grainger one; just need to locate it here in the UK!

Have you considered a tubular cam lock or a barrel bolt lock? They can be designed to go through both panels to lock them together. Just look for ones with adjustable lengths or longer throws to bridge that 18mm gap. A keyed sliding door lock might also work — it's basically a bolt in a housing that mounts to one door and locks into the other.

Yeah, I looked at tubular cam locks, but since my doors are only 22mm thick, I can't find a bolt long enough for that gap. Any links for those keyed sliding door locks you're talking about? My search on Google isn't yielding anything useful.
