How Can I Make a Hands-Free 360-Degree Dog Leash?

I'm looking for advice on creating a DIY dog leash that automatically adapts to my dog's movements as we walk together. The idea is for it to have a swivel mechanism so that whenever my dog goes around me, it adjusts without getting tangled. I previously chatted with ChatGPT about using Nylon bands and attaching 2-inch swivel snap hooks, which seems okay, but I'm curious if anyone else has tackled a project like this or has any innovative suggestions to help me out. I've got a couple of examples of what I'm envisioning: the Orbit 360 dog leash and the FLO Unleashed 360-degree training system. Thanks for any ideas!

I've tried something similar before, and one challenge is that the band needs to be rigid enough; otherwise, the swivel can jam up, which makes it a fixed-size item. If you're just creating something for personal use, this might be okay, but keep an eye on that feature!

Oh, I’m fine if it's just for me! Did it work well enough?

You might want to consider doing some training instead. Using a traditional leash may be better for training purposes – I learned this the hard way! (Former dog trainer ex-wife, haha.)

I see your point, but there are times when a hands-free system could really help, especially in specific situations where quick engagement is necessary. It’s about balance! With a strong dog, those unexpected pulls can lead to tricky situations.

From what I gather, you want a class of leash that allows your dog to run in circles around you without getting twisted up. I found some products that looked like ball joints for attachment, but they seem designed for vertical mounting, which might not work for your setup.

If you check out the products I mentioned, they both actually do have the waist setup. One was an unsuccessful Kickstarter, while the other isn't out yet.

Honestly, I think training is where it starts. Your dog shouldn’t be circling you, and a hands-free leash might not encourage the best walking habits.

Honestly, if you're looking for a simple solution, just try twirling a bit as you walk – sometimes it just takes a little flair to keep things moving smoothly! With my dog, though, it feels more like I'm in a dance recital than just walking, lol.
