I'm looking for a way to secure the inner side of my garden door handle so that it won't turn at all, even when the door is unlocked. The door is usually unlocked, but when my cousin visits with her 3-year-old, I need to lock it to prevent her from wandering into the garden unnoticed. I noticed that the mechanism connects both handles, so just gluing or screwing it won't work. Any ideas on how to achieve this?

You might consider adding a second handle that’s up high. I have a similar setup on my backyard door where I installed one knob lower and one higher. From the inside, both have to be turned to unlock it, but from the outside, only the top one works. That way, the lower handle’s mechanism can be removed or blocked, keeping the child safe!
Have you thought about using one of those child-proof door handle covers? They’re designed to prevent little ones from opening doors, and that might save you some hassle! Just make sure to find one that’s suitable for outdoor use.
I looked into that, but most options I found are not ideal for outdoor use and they look a bit strange. I’m aiming for something that fits in better with the garden!
That sounds like a smart idea! We’d just need to figure out how to install a second handle since we want it simple like a regular door.
