Hey everyone! We just moved into a new build house last year, and I want to focus on making our garden more inviting for birds this year. I've seen a few wagtails and robins around, but I'd love to attract even more. Right now, our garden is mostly mud, so the birds are just enjoying the puddles. I've already put up a feeder that's been quite popular!
I'm thinking of planting a buddleia or hydrangea near the feeder, and I also have a bird bath that I want to place in a low barrel planter with some greenery for cover. I'm looking for more plant ideas that birds would like and that are relatively low-maintenance since I'm a beginner. Additionally, I need to ensure that any plants I choose are safe for dogs. Thanks for your help!

Even if you're not a gardening expert, you can still enjoy a variety of birds at your feeder. In my garden, blue tits nest in our laurel bush, and we get lots of different visitors like nuthatches and goldfinches. Setting up a feeding station with worms seems to be a hit, and the robins in particular can be very friendly! Just give it time and they’ll come around. If you can manage, a small pond could also work wonders for attracting wildlife in the long term.
It’s awesome that you want to attract birds! Planting a couple of small trees is a great idea. Look for trees that stay under 3 meters to avoid any potential restrictions. Also, hedgerows and berry-producing shrubs can provide food and shelter, just be cautious about toxic plants for your dog. A mix of clover and grass for your lawn can bring in more bugs, which will attract the birds too!
Adding a native hedgerow and some small fruit trees like apple or cherry would really enhance your garden. These not only attract birds but also draw in pollinators. Plus, consider planting a colorful meadow of annual flowers—they're great for biodiversity! This strategy can buy you some time as you plan your longer-term garden layout.
