I set up a pergola to enjoy my outdoor space, but I've found that in the middle of summer, it doesn't block much sun at all. I've tried adding some shade cloth, but it just ends up looking messy and isn't very effective. I'm looking for suggestions on how to achieve proper shade without having to constantly make adjustments. Any tips?

Pergolas are mainly decorative, so don't expect them to block too much sun, especially when it's directly overhead. To get more shade, you might want to consider adding lattice work or climbing plants like vines that can grow over the top. Some people also use outdoor curtains or even weave fabric across the rafters for a more sheltered feel.
I was in the same struggle last summer! We ended up installing retractable awnings like the ones at outdoor cafes, which made a huge difference. You get to choose how much shade you want, so you're not constantly fussing with anything. We also added climbing plants like wisteria, which really turned our space into a lush retreat over time. If you need quick fixes, large umbrellas or bamboo blinds could work too until you find something more permanent. And hey, I even thought about maybe incorporating solar panels for shade — it's a wild idea, but who knows?
If you want to maximize shade, check if the rafters are aligned north-south — that really helps when the sun is low in the sky. However, they aren't great at noon when the sun’s high up. Another option is to look into adjustable louver kits that let you control how much sun gets in.

That sounds awesome! I love the idea of combining functionality with aesthetics. A louvered setup might actually be perfect for my space too!
