I recently moved into a house that had a rotting deck with a pergola, where the pergola supports doubled as deck supports. When the deck was removed, I filled in the 6x6 supports with treated wood. We initially aimed to repaint the pergola, so I thought the cracks wouldn't matter; I'd just fill them with wood filler and paint over. However, my wife prefers staining instead of painting. Since wood filler doesn't take stain well and there are multiple directions of wood grain with several cracks, I'm looking for suggestions on how to make these supports look nicer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Here are pictures of the 6x6 supports: https://ibb.co/M5kjZMVV https://ibb.co/vvKyrdTM https://ibb.co/6cVrTYJd

One good option is to cover those supports with 6" (or what looks like 8x8) fence boards. You can essentially create a box around the supports, which can definitely boost the visual appeal. I've seen this style, and it looks pretty sharp!

I’m trying to visualize that. Are you suggesting the fence boards should run horizontally? Would you stack them two high or something?
