How Can I Make My Unpermitted Porch Addition Compliant?

Asked By HouseHunter99 On

I recently bought a budget-friendly house that has an unpermitted addition which used to be a screened-in porch. I've found the original plans that show it as a walled-in porch. I'm curious about how complicated it would be to get permits to revert this space back to its original plans. Anyone dealt with something similar?

Why stress about the permits? I did a lot of renovations without getting permits and it turned out fine. But do keep in mind that if you ever sell, you'll need to disclose it as unpermitted work.

Just call your local city office to ask about the permit process. Since you didn't actually do the work, they should be able to guide you on what steps you'll need to take. It might be more straightforward than you think!

Honestly, a lot of older homes have unpermitted work. Even some newer builds have permits but end up with shoddy construction. It’s not unusual, so don’t feel too bad about it!

Yeah, but you might want to move on this if you ever plan to sell. It's good to check with the city.

Plus, your insurance could be impacted, so it’s wise to consider getting it sorted out.
