How Can I Make My White Doors Look Like Wood?

Asked By CraftyNinja42 On

I have these plain white interior doors called 'No Panel Primed White Smooth Flush Hardboard Hollow Core Composite Interior Door Slab', and I'm looking to give them a wood look. Is there a way to wrap them in veneer or thin plywood without making them too thick to fit properly in the doorway? Any suggestions would be super helpful! Thanks!

They used to have these things called 'door skins' made of thin wood that you could glue onto the doors. You might still find them at specialty lumber stores. However, you need to glue them tightly with contact adhesive and clamp them as it dries, and keep in mind that you'd still end up with painted edges. Considering cost and effort, replacing the doors with solid wood may save you time and hassle in the long run!

Faux wood paint could be an option, but it doesn’t always look amazing unless you’re standing a good distance away. Just something to consider if you're looking for a quick fix!

You could check out peel and stick faux wood door covers online. They’re an easy way to add some warmth without a complete door replacement, though you may need to touch up the edges with paint to match. It’s definitely worth considering!

You could definitely veneer them, but just keep in mind that you'd still have hollow core doors that look a bit better on the surface. Also, the edges wouldn’t be wood, which can be a downside. If your doors are relatively new, swapping them for real wood grain slabs might be a better choice, although you might need to trim them a bit to fit!
