I'm living in a basement bedroom with my spouse, and it seems like our house doesn't have the best drainage system, especially when we get heavy rain. Water starts pooling on one side of the room, probably due to a crack in the foundation. We've been drying it with towels and fans, but we're considering ripping out the carpet since it's absorbing the water. Our main concern now is how to contain the water on the concrete floor so it doesn't spread. We need to find a way to direct the flooding into a specific area where we can easily clean it up. Any advice would be appreciated, especially since we can't afford a contractor to fix the foundation!

First, it might help to check the outside of your home for any drainage issues. Make sure your gutters are directing water away from the house. Sometimes, it’s not just cracks but also the porosity of concrete that lets water seep through. You could consider getting some portable dehumidifiers or even disposable ones to help with the moisture inside. Since you're on a hill, have you thought about installing a retaining wall to help manage the water flow?

If the water is only coming in at one point, there might not be an issue with the whole concrete. But if you need to add drainage in that area, it could be a bit of work depending on your yard setup. Just make sure it’s not a huge expense!
