How Can I Manage My Overgrown Succulent?

Hey everyone! I've had my succulent for over 5 years and it's been a tough little guy, surviving all sorts of mishaps and even producing a bunch of babies. Recently, it has grown quite tall and is toppling over because of its weight. Is it safe to trim it back? Also, what are some best practices for taking care of it moving forward?

It sounds like your succulent might be experiencing etiolation, which is when it grows tall and stretched due to insufficient light. If that's the case, you could try moving it to a brighter spot or using a grow light to help it grow more compactly. If you want to keep the plant from flopping over, it’s totally fine to trim back those tall growths and reroot them! Alternatively, if it’s a type that naturally grows tall, you might just let it do its thing and enjoy its unique look.

Definitely, you can trim your succulent! If it's been getting enough light and is still growing tall, it may just be its natural growth pattern. If you choose to cut it back, you'll want to make sure to let any cuttings dry out before replanting to prevent rot. Just keep an eye on its light exposure so it doesn’t stretch too much in the future!
