I've got about an acre of land, and my vegetable garden along with some parts of the yard tends to collect a lot of standing water. The area that's problematic is a little downhill from my driveway, and I have neighbors on both sides and horses behind my property. I want to manage the water without upsetting anyone by directing it into their yards. Sending it toward my driveway seems pricey. I'm wondering how effective vertical drains are and if there are any cheaper alternatives to soakaways?

Without seeing your property layout, it’s a bit tricky to suggest specifics, but one idea is to plant some water-loving plants, especially on the side near the horses. A rain garden could really help soak up some of that excess water. Willows and similar trees are great at absorbing lots of moisture, almost acting like sponges.
It really depends on your specific situation, but have you thought about using a small pump, like the ones made for fountains? You could direct the water to a catchment tank uphill and use that water later for your plants when needed. Super convenient, and it keeps the water from just sitting stagnant!
