How Can I Maximize the Life of My New M18 Batteries?

I just got my first tool set that comes with two M18 6.0 amp batteries. I'm wondering what the best practices are to prolong their life. Should I fully charge both batteries right away, or is it better to discharge them first before charging?

You really don't have to worry too much about whether to charge or discharge first. Lithium-ion batteries don't have that memory effect, so it won’t affect longevity either way. However, it's a good practice to fully charge them before initial use since chargers tend to catch any battery defects better than the tools themselves. For longer storage, charging to full (around 4.12v per cell) is fine and won’t degrade them too badly. You might consider skipping the ‘topping off’ routine if you only use them a little, but that's not necessary for most cases. Just avoid letting them sit at very low levels!

Yeah, heat is a killer too! Make sure you’re not storing them in a hot spot, especially when they’re fully charged. Even where you position them can make a big difference!
