How can I modernize my outdated 90s fireplace setup?

I'm considering buying a house that has a pretty outdated fireplace set up featuring an awkward built-in space for old TVs. It's not only poorly designed but also off-center from the mantle, which I find really unappealing. I don't want to put a TV over the fireplace either. What are some ways to revamp this space and give it a more modern look? Here's a picture of the current setup: https://i.imgur.com/YEX1LHP.png

To start off, I'd suggest ditching the TV and stereo above the fireplace. Instead, why not find some large artwork to cover that space? You could also fill the wood storage area with stacked firewood. Updating the ceiling fan and window treatments could really help too. If you're up for it, a fresh coat of paint can do wonders! But I'll be honest, updating the tile might be a big project and could require some serious effort and cash.

Totally agree! Artwork or a nice tapestry would really elevate the space.

If the off-center look doesn't bother you too much, I have a few ideas. You could use high heat paint to change the brass accents to a sleek matte black, or even remove them if they're removable. A floor-to-ceiling modern bookcase on the right could balance out the space nicely. I’d also suggest filling in the arch above the mantle, covering it up with a flat wall and a suitable piece of art. Swap out the mini-blinds for stylish drapes too, and always consider reorienting the furniture for a better layout.

One approach could be to build a new mantle just on the fireplace side, and then turn the other half into a tall built-in shelf that breaks the visual monotony. Leaning into the asymmetry might actually work in your favor! While it may be a costly fix to center the fireplace, you could consider positioning your TV to the right side of the room instead.
