I've been trying to mow my lawn for a month, but it's been damp and wet every day. It's massively overgrown now, and even underneath the grass is soaking wet all day. I'm worried about damaging my mower, but I need to cut the lawn before winter hits. Should I just hire a petrol strimmer and tackle it that way?

Honestly? Just mow it! Start high and lower the height for each cut until you reach your desired length. You won't damage anything as long as you clean the mower afterward.
While waiting for it to dry, you might just have to mow it anyway. Aim for a breezy day if you can. Grass doesn't need to be completely dry, just mostly. And remember, cutting it shorter on the subsequent days will help it dry out faster!
Right? It's tough waiting for the right weather!
If your grass is way too long, run a strimmer through it, rake it afterwards, and then mow. It helps manage the mess, and subsequent cuts will be easier!
Don't stress too much about the wet grass damaging your mower. You can definitely mow in the wet, though it might not look perfect. I'd suggest starting with the highest mower setting. If it's really tall, make the first pass at that setting and then gradually lower it for subsequent cuts. Better to get it done than let it go longer!
True! I usually raise my mower's height when it's wet to avoid any issues.
Yeah, I've mowed when it was wet before and it turned out fine, just not the best finish.
If you're dealing with really long grass, consider using a strimmer first to shorten it. Then, mow using the highest setting again. It helps prevent clogging and makes the process easier. Just be prepared to empty the clippings frequently!
That's solid advice. The clogging issue is real!
Definitely! I've learned that from experience.

Lol, I feel you! My lawn has turned into a jungle!
