How Can I Prevent Lower Back Pain While Gardening?

I'm a beginner at gardening and recently started a big weeding project. After just the first day, I ended up with lower back pain! Does anyone have tips or posture advice for doing hours of weeding close to the ground?

I've been gardening for a couple of years now and can tell you that it continues to hurt no matter what! However, I always try to use a stool or some sort of support to avoid strain. Core strengthening exercises really make a difference too—think planks and things that help your posture.

It's super important to maintain a good posture. Always keep your back straight and try supporting yourself with one arm while reaching down with the other. Also, a pelvic tilt exercise can really help strengthen your lower back over time. Just lay on your back, push your lower back into the floor, and hold. Do a few reps daily to build strength and hopefully avoid pain while weeding!

Using a kneeler can be a huge help! I love mine because it allows me to keep my back straight while working. Don't forget to stretch both before and after gardening! Also, check out that podcast 'The Beet'—they have a great episode with practical tips for gardeners.
