How Can I Prevent Woodworms in Stored Tonewood?

Asked By LivelyWood82 On

I'm looking to buy some violin tonewood in bulk, but I'm really worried about woodworms, which are quite common in violin shops. I've heard that older violins can harbor these pests, and I want to make sure my stock is safe from any infestations. I know that wrapping the wood isn't ideal for aging since it needs good air circulation. Are there any effective sprays or treatments that can help repel woodworms?

Have you thought about using borate wood treatment? It's a solid option that can kill existing pests if any are present and help prevent future infestations.

I’ve got a stash of oak from some dodgy sources and I’ve been using diatomaceous earth to powder everything. I’ll check back in a decade to see if it worked! Just a heads up though—be careful with DE; it's important to wear a mask when you handle it, as it can be harmful to your lungs.

Haha, remind me in 10 years too! Let’s see if it does the trick.

Good to know! I had no idea it could be dangerous. Thanks for the caution!
