How Can I Proactively Control Pests in My Houseplants?

Hey everyone! I'm a newbie at taking care of houseplants and it's been a fun journey so far. However, I've been freaking out about pests because I absolutely hate bugs. What preventive measures can I take against pests? I know gnats usually come with the soil, and I'm eager to tackle that before it becomes an issue. I've heard about baking the soil to kill bugs, but I know that might harm the nutrients and isn't ideal. Is there any sort of spray or granules I could use to keep pests at bay? My therapist, who is a big fan of houseplants, mentioned using a raid spray designed for plants. Any tips or experiences would be appreciated! Thanks a lot!

It's totally fine to heat-treat your soil to zap pests, just make sure it doesn't get too hot—aim for about 180°F for half an hour. Keep your plants safe by quarantining any new additions and don’t place them near open windows where critters could sneak in. As for fungus gnats, they’re pretty persistent but you can tackle them with some mosquito dunk water. Just stay on top of the care and you should be okay!

For a more natural approach, consider spreading diatomaceous earth on the dry soil. Just make sure to wear gloves and a mask when you're applying it. It works wonders as a preventative barrier against pests!

While there are systemic insecticides available, I wouldn't use them unless you’ve got an actual infestation. For a gentler option, you can keep Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew handy—it's targeted and doesn’t harm all pests. Just remember to check new plants for signs of pests before bringing them home, and avoid putting any plants outside to prevent attracting bugs. It's all about being cautious with what you introduce into your plant family! And don't worry, pest issues are pretty common, just part of the plant ownership experience!

For soil, try brands that are known to be pest-free. There are good alternatives out there! Just be sure to inspect plants before purchasing since some clearance rack plants can have hidden issues.

Thanks for all the info! Do you have any soil recommendations? I went with Miracle-Gro without knowing about the pest issues and now I'm concerned since I've heard mixed experiences with different brands.
