I've recently installed about 1500 square feet of new sod, but it's getting destroyed every night by what I believe are raccoons. I live in Oakland, CA, and I'm looking for practical solutions. Covering the entire yard with netting seems really expensive and not necessarily effective. What options do I have to keep these pesky animals away?

In my experience, an electric fence is the only thing that really did the trick! It kept those raccoons out for good.
I had a good experience using a battery-operated, motion-activated sprinkler hooked up to a garden hose. It worked well for me until the sod was fully rooted. Definitely worth a shot!
You might want to consider trapping raccoons and relocating them or hiring an exterminator who specializes in this type of nuisance. Trust me, I've been there—these critters wiped out my garden earlier this year! ?
But if an exterminator handles it, won't that just create room for new raccoons? Plus, it's usually pretty pricey!

That sounds interesting! Do you have a brand you could recommend?
