How Can I Reduce Highway Noise in My Backyard?

Asked By User1234! On

Hey everyone! I live in a house that's backed by a busy and noisy highway, and my 6' vinyl fence doesn't do much to block the sound. I'm exploring options to make my backyard more peaceful and am considering adding a structure like a pool house or a mother-in-law suite using noise-reducing materials. Who should I reach out to for help with this—would that be a landscape contractor or a general building contractor? My partner and I are weighing whether to stay and improve our home (after living here for 22 years) or to sell, especially since we're getting older and want a quieter living environment. Thanks in advance for any advice!

If the noise is really bothering you, moving might be a more straightforward solution. Spending money on a new structure could feel wasted if it doesn't do much to reduce the noise. Staying just to finish paying off the mortgage sounds like it could lead to regrets.

Thanks for that perspective! It's definitely something I'll consider moving forward.

If you've got the space, planting dense shrubs or trees can really help as sound barriers. They not only redirect sound but also absorb it, which could be beneficial in your situation.

That’s a great idea! Even if it doesn't fully fix the problem, it could make your yard look nicer for potential buyers. Thanks for the tip!

Totally agree! It's amazing how much plants can reduce sound. Plus, they're great for aesthetics!
