How Can I Reduce Noise as an Upstairs Neighbor?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a situation as an upstairs neighbor. I tend to stay up late playing board games and chatting, but I've been getting texts from the person living below me instead of them just messaging me directly, even though they have my number. I already soundproofed my walls, but I'm wondering what I can do about my floor. Would putting in a carpet or area rugs help reduce the noise? Thanks for any advice!

Definitely, adding a carpet or area rugs can help a lot, especially if you have hard floors. I’d also recommend using carpet pads underneath for extra sound dampening. My past leases required at least 70% of the floor to be covered with rugs to keep noise to a minimum. While it won't completely eliminate noise, it should help reduce those complaints from your downstairs neighbor!

Yeah, area rugs can really help! Slippers or even just going barefoot can also minimize noise. But if your downstairs neighbor is sensitive, they might still hear sounds that you're not even making. Just try to keep it down a bit and see if that helps!

Honestly, don't stress too much about it! Living upstairs means you'll make some noise, and talking during board games shouldn't be that disruptive. If you do add a rug or two, that's great, but bear in mind that some people will complain no matter what. Unless you're stomping around in heavy boots, it's just part of apartment living!

I agree! But it might be worth considering the lease agreement. If there are noise restrictions after a certain hour, it wouldn’t hurt to be mindful of that, too.

Exactly! If the noise really is bothering them that much, they might just need to adjust their expectations of apartment living. ?
