How Can I Reduce Noise from a Shared Wall in My Condo?

Hey everyone! I live in a 1950s condo, and the wall I share with my neighbor is quite thick but doesn't block sound very well. I can hear everything they're up to, from vacuuming to their TV shows. It's particularly awkward since they can hear me too and often comment on my gatherings or music sessions. I can't remove any materials from the wall, and I'm unsure about its load-bearing capacity. I've thought about building a new wall with sound insulation, but I'd like to know if there are easier or more affordable solutions! Thanks in advance!

You might want to check out a product called sonoPan. I saw it being used in a renovation video, and it can be applied over your existing wall before adding new drywall. It could help with soundproofing without too much hassle!

If you're looking for a quick and cheap fix, grab some acoustic foam panels from a place like Walmart and attach them to the wall with command strips. It might not be as effective as more expensive solutions but it'll help reduce some of the noise.

Your plaster wall isn't going to do you any favors with sound. To effectively reduce noise, you'll likely need to frame a new stud wall a couple of inches away from the current one. Use fiberglass or mineral wool insulation and finish it with drywall. This way, you create an air gap that really helps reduce sound transmission. You could add mass-loaded vinyl or soundboard for extra soundproofing too, but the new wall is where you'll really see results. It does take some time and materials, plus you'll lose a bit of space, but it can go from 'I can hear every Price is Right ding' to almost no noise!

This is the way! The airspace really makes a difference, plus it gives you a chance to add new electrical outlets if needed. Just remember to use putty pads to seal any gaps; otherwise, sound will still sneak through.
