How Can I Reduce Noise from My HVAC Return Vent?

Asked By ChillaxNinja49 On

I'm dealing with a really loud noise coming from my return feed vent, and I'm looking for some advice on how to quiet it down. The vent has about 15 feet of ducting leading to the furnace blower. It's the only return feed I have. I have a single-stage 3.5 Ton AC condenser, and I usually set the furnace blower to its highest fan speed when it's running. I've already tried removing the vent, but it didn't help. Plus, I've got a fresh air filter in place.

15 feet of ducting seems pretty small for a 3.5 ton unit. I’d recommend looking into adding a second return vent. It might help balance things out and reduce noise.

You might want to lower the fan speed or consider enlarging the return vent. It could help reduce the noise if there's less air rushing through at a high speed.

I totally relate! We only have one return vent in the living room and it's so loud that I can barely hear the TV when it kicks on. The HVAC guy suggested running ductwork to the attic and adding three small return vents in different rooms, but it was quoted at $700. Definitely something to consider!

Make sure to check your air filter again; if it's clogged with dust, it could be causing the noise. A clean filter can really make a difference!
