How Can I Reduce Noise from My HVAC Unit?

I have a noisy HVAC system that's built into a closet in my living area, and it's driving me crazy! The builder of our house in 1988 refused to put the unit in the attic due to concerns about leaks damaging the ceiling. Now, every time it runs, it's so loud that we have to crank up the TV. I'm looking for suggestions on how to make it quieter without having to spend a fortune moving it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked if your HVAC unit requires airflow? If it has a vent leading into it, you might consider products like Sonopan. It's great for soundproofing and can really cut down on noise, provided it meets your local building codes.

What kind of HVAC system do you have? Knowing if it’s an electric heat pump or a natural gas furnace could help. The noise could stem from the air handler itself or the airflow, possibly because your ductwork is undersized. If that's the case, redoing it might alleviate the pressure noise.
