I recently got my stolen bike frame back, but it's been covered in spray paint from some not-so-friendly past owners. I want to strip the paint off but keep the original factory finish intact if possible. Here's what I currently have on hand: acetone, Gamsol (100% odourless mineral spirits), scrapers, and sandpaper in various grits. Any advice on the least messy and labor-intensive methods to do this? Also, do I need to prepare myself mentally for the possibility of losing the original finish?

If the paint hasn't had too much time to settle and the original finish is still shiny and undamaged, you might be in luck! Something like Goof Off or Goo Gone can often get rid of it without harming the factory finish at all. Just make sure to test a small area first, just in case!
One pro tip I swear by is using carb cleaner at a coin-op car wash. Spray it on, let it bubble for a bit, then hit it with a high-pressure rinse. It won’t affect the original finish or any stickers, just zaps the spray paint right off!
Whoa, that sounds like a game changer! I never would have thought of carb cleaner or taking it to a car wash. You’ve got a genius husband for sure! Thanks for the tip!
You'll want to be careful with mechanical methods like scrapers and sandpaper, as they can strip everything in their path. Try something like a mildly abrasive bristle pad or a Magic Eraser to see if it takes off the spray paint without damaging the paint beneath. The spray paint should be easier to remove than you think!
Cheers! I’m considering that along with the Goof Off suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes!

Haha awesome! I didn't even think to add Goo-Gone to my supplies, but I do have some. Glad to know it's a potential fix!
