How Can I Replace My Kitchen Countertop on a Budget?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a tight spot. I'm renting a charming 1920's house with a narrow galley kitchen and recently discovered mold growing in the particle board under my sink because of a slow leak. My landlord has given me the go-ahead to replace the countertop since I'm allergic to mold, but the catch is that I need a countertop with a depth of 22.5" to fit my cabinets, which are only 21" deep. Custom options are way out of my budget for a rental, and my landlord refuses to acknowledge the mold issue. I just want to make my kitchen safe and functional again without breaking the bank. Does anyone have suggestions for inexpensive options, or can laminate countertops be cut to the depth I need? Thanks a ton for any help!

First off, make sure the leak is fixed and the mold is fully taken care of before you replace anything. If the countertop isn’t severely damaged, you could just keep it. But if replacing it is a must, you can buy a 25" countertop and trim it down to 22.5". Check out this laminate option from Home Depot; it could work for you: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-8-ft-Straight-Laminate-Countertop-Kit-Included-in-Gloss-Calcutta-Marble-with-Full-Wrap-Ogee-Edge-Backsplash-12337KT08N4925/304225555. Just make sure to pick one with a separate backsplash so cutting it evenly is easier.

Thanks for the link! I hope to find someone who can help with the cutting if I go this route, as I don't want to mess it up myself.

Why not just replace the countertop if it’s the cabinet that has mold? If you end up looking for used materials, places like ReStore might have what you need. I've seen people find great materials there. And if you consider DIY, just know that my first attempt didn’t go well. Hiring a pro for the measuring and cutting turned out to be reasonably priced, so maybe get a few quotes to see if that’s a viable option for you.

I agree! If it were up to me, I'd replace the entire setup. I'm trying to make it livable for now until I can move again. Unfortunately, my luck at ReStore hasn't been good so far, but I'm definitely considering getting quotes. Thanks for the suggestion!
