How Can I Route a Straight Line in a Panel Without a Plunge Router?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to route a straight line inside a panel that matches the width of my router bit, but I only have a palm router, not a plunge router. I'm considering clamping pieces of wood on either side of my line to align perfectly with the router's base. My plan is to position one edge of the router against the wood and push it through. Do you think this will work, or is it a bad idea? Any tips would be appreciated!

You could also drill an entry hole with a bit that matches your router's width. It might help create a clean start!

Great idea! If it’s a bit smaller, that’d still work, right?

Absolutely! If you’re not super precise, maybe do a pilot hole and then use a jigsaw for most of it, cleaning up the edges with the router afterward.

That sounds like a good plan! Just try a test run first to get the hang of it. You'll feel more confident once you do!

Yeah, I definitely need to do a practice round!

Using a single piece clamped down should do the trick! Just make sure to practice first to get your distance right between the clamp and the router. This way, you can check where to start and stop with a piece of tape. The two-piece setup is fine too, but go slow and straight to avoid any issues. Hope that helps!

So, I should lower it down straight like a plunge router instead of tilting it? Got it!
