I'm looking for advice on how to prevent flooding from my second-floor laundry setup. We just had an unfortunate incident where our old washer's drainage pan failed, leading to significant ceiling damage below. Now, with a new washer in place, I'm considering whether to fix the existing drain or just cap it. I know I need to address the risks from a burst supply hose and potential leaks from the washer itself. What have you all done to avoid these issues? Have you opted to cap the drain, fix it, implement sensors, or choose another solution? Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve equipped my washer with smart water sensors that can alert me of leaks. Plus, whenever I head out of town, I turn off the water supply to the washer—it's a simple yet effective precaution.
When I renovated and moved my laundry upstairs, I installed a floor drain under the washer with a gentle slope in the tiles to guide water away. This way, it acts like a shower drain and catches spills effectively. Also, investing in good quality hoses is crucial, since most leaks come from them bursting.
Definitely fix the drain! You want a reliable way for any excess water to escape. If you just cap it, what will happen if your washer starts leaking at an inconvenient time? An alarm is a good idea too, but having that drain in place should be your main focus.
