How Can I Safeguard My Bathroom Pipes During a Freeze?

I'm currently renovating my master bathroom in Dallas, and we've got a freeze warning in effect tonight that will last until Thursday with temperatures dipping into the teens, as low as 15°F. I can't let water run or drip in the master bath because of the ongoing renovation. What precautions should I take to protect my pipes from freezing during this cold spell?

It's a solid idea to keep your home heated, especially if you're living there. With the heat set to 69°F, your bathroom shouldn’t get too cold. Just be mindful that if the temperature does drop to 32°F or below in any part of the house, that's when pipes could freeze, so consider making sure that area stays warm enough during the freeze.

Yeah, I’m keeping the heat on! I don’t expect it’ll be much colder than 69°F with the heat running. Just worried that the pipes might still be affected since there's no water moving.

Draining your plumbing system might be the safest bet here, especially since you're not able to let water flow. If your pipes are indeed on external walls, that would be a good call. On the other hand, if your interior pipes are heated and you're maintaining a decent temperature, they should be fine. Just keep an eye out!

If you're still living in the house, consider opening all your sink cabinets to let warm air circulate around the pipes. It’s good to keep a nearby faucet dripping if possible. Since you mentioned your pipes might be on outside walls, it could be wise to shut off the water supply to that bathroom and open the faucet slightly to relieve any pressure.
