How Can I Safely Clear My Backyard of Weeds and Infestations?

I'm struggling with a backyard that's completely overrun by weeds, blackberries, and foxtail. I'm looking for effective ways to clear it out and start fresh without having to resort to extreme measures like flamethrowers, salting, or using harmful chemicals, especially since I have two dogs at home. I'm considering using a tiller, but I'm worried that it might just spread the seeds and make the problem worse. Any advice?

First off, mowing it down is a good starting point. After that, you can use a method called solarization. Just cover the area with a clear plastic tarp; the sun will heat the ground up to about 140 degrees, which should kill off most of the plants and their seeds. It's a safe method and won't harm your pets!

Why wouldn't it help now? Is it just because everything is already established?
