How Can I Safely Close Off Openings in My Bedroom?

I'm looking to close off two openings in my upstairs bedroom that overlook the living room. I want to transform this space for my daughters, but safety is my top priority. I'm hoping to find an inexpensive way to seal these openings. Any suggestions?

If you're comfortable with it, learning to drywall is a solid option and won't break the bank. Just make sure to consider how you'll handle the other side, especially if there's scaffolding involved. Safety first!
