How Can I Safely Dispose of Old Paint?

Hey everyone! I found about 15 cans of old paint under my stairs and I'm stuck on how to dispose of them properly. The local landfill won't accept liquid paint, and I can't just toss them into the regular trash either. I don't have a garage or garden to let them dry out, and some of the lids are completely stuck. Any suggestions on what I can do?

Look up your local government website for hazardous materials disposal options. They might have specific days or locations where you can drop off old paint safely.

You might want to check out some paint hardeners at home supply stores; they can help turn liquid paint into a solid for easier disposal. Here's a link to one on Home Depot if you're interested: [Paint Hardener](https://www.homedepot.com/p/M-1-5-oz-Paint-Hardener-for-Paint-Disposal-79205M/204760342).

Disposal rules depend on where you live. Here, oil-based paint is treated as hazardous waste, so there’s a special place for that. Latex paint can go in the regular trash after it’s dry. You can speed up the drying process by spreading it on cardboard. Also, consider giving it away on a neighborhood site if you have an active community forum.

If you can, just remove the lids from the cans. The paint dries out fairly quickly, and once it’s solid, you can toss it in the trash. Just remember that you need to let it dry completely first!
