I recently bought a house and discovered that the old black, textured coating on the countertops is not their original surface. After some wear and tear, we found that beneath the black, there are light-colored, fake granite countertops. We're trying to figure out the best method to remove that black coating without damaging the underneath. We can't tell if it's contact paper or a DIY countertop kit, but so far, using a hairdryer and scraper isn't effective and seems like it'll take forever. We don't have the budget for new countertops and really want to get rid of this unattractive black coating. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, you might want to think about just getting new synthetic countertops. They’re pretty affordable and can last over a decade with the right care. Just some food for thought!
When you say 'fake granite,' are you referring to a laminate like Formica, or is it more solid-surface like Corian? That’s key. If it’s just paint from a renewal kit, you might need a finish remover first, and then try to repaint. It can totally change the look of your counters if you do it right! Check out this guide I found: https://youtu.be/2waIbsZx6Rg. Good luck!
Do you have a photo? It might help to see exactly what you’re dealing with! Sometimes visuals can give better insight into how to tackle the removal.
I’d be cautious about removing that coating. It could be hiding some issues like burn marks underneath. If you have the budget, it might be worth considering saving up for new countertops instead of sinking time and effort into this removal process. Just an idea!
