How Can I Safely Run an Extension Cord to My Front Patio?

Hey everyone! I'm currently renting and can't make any permanent electrical changes. With the holidays coming up, I really want to decorate my front patio, which doesn't have an outlet but has a window and a door for access. I've used an Edison socket adapter before, but it felt a bit unsafe. I'm looking for suggestions on how to run an extension cord through a window or under a door. I've also considered talking to my landlord about adding an outlet later, so any temporary solutions that are safe would be great!

You can use a pool noodle! Just cut it to the width of your window and make a slit down the middle. Insert the cord through the slit, then open the window and place the pool noodle across the bottom before closing the window down on it. This way, you can keep bugs and weather out. If the window won't stay secure, consider getting a window clamp to help hold it in place.

Why not use the outdoor GFCI-protected outlet you already have? Just run a long extension cord from the back to the front. For low-amperage holiday lights, the difference in cord length isn't a big deal, and there are outdoor extension cords designed for this that are UL-approved. Just remember to bring everything in after the holidays to keep them safe!

If you're in a colder area, maintaining a weather seal is crucial. You can run a temporary line outside through a sliding window by using a thick self-adhesive weather strip that compresses around the wire. For your lights, if you're just plugging in LED string lights, a screw-in socket that's compatible with a 2-prong plug would work well.
