How Can I Save Money on My Woodworking Hobby?

Hey everyone! I'm really getting into woodworking, but it's turning out to be quite an expensive hobby. I recently ordered 300 pocket hole screws from Amazon, hoping to cut down costs. What are some tips or tricks you use to save money on supplies or tools? Also, what items do you believe are worth investing in?

A big tip is to avoid splurging on tools you don't need right away. I've learned the hard way that many tools end up collecting dust. If something seems gimmicky or overly complex, chances are it won’t deliver. You can find budget-friendly options for measuring tools, for example, just test them at the store! Also, consider joining a woodworking guild; borrowing tools can save a lot if you only need them for one-off projects.

Don't forget about Facebook Marketplace for wood! I've found some awesome deals from folks who are no longer into woodworking. If you’re aiming to save big, you can even check for free furniture that you can disassemble for materials. It’s a win-win!

Definitely check out local sawmills for lumber – it’s often cheaper and better quality than at big stores. For tools, I recommend investing in decent quality; you don't have to go top-shelf. Something like Harbor Freight has great options when you're starting out. Just bought a pocket hole jig there and love it! And remember, start small and build up your toolset as needed.
