How Can I Seal the Gaps in My Old Garage Door?

Asked By CoolGiraffe72 On

I've been struggling with the heat in my master bedroom, which is directly above my garage. We've installed attic insulation and checked our HVAC multiple times, but it didn't fully resolve the issue. I think the problem might be coming from my old garage door that has significant gaps at the top and sides, letting in sunlight and hot air. Since we only use the garage for storage, we don't check it often. I found some pictures that show the gaps. Can I tackle sealing these gaps myself, or should I hire a professional for this job?

Definitely consider DIY options. You can find garage door weather stripping online or at local stores. Check out this PVC seal from Lowe's; it’s effective and not too hard to install!

Thanks for the link! I’ll look into it. I also noticed there's a white option available as well.

You’ll want to check how your garage door seals against the frame when it’s closed. Most doors have a rubber seal on the outside that keeps air from coming in. If it’s missing or worn out, that’s likely your issue. You might be able to replace it yourself pretty easily. Just be sure to measure the gaps, and you can buy the weather stripping at any home improvement store!

Gotcha! I've seen similar issues and it really makes a difference once you seal them up. Let me know if you need tips on installation!
