I've got a chain link gate that I'm looking to secure so my kid can't open it or squeeze through. The gate is a bit wonky: the top is too long, and the locking mechanism is short. I'm considering either blocking the opening with some chain link or pulling the gate closer using ratchet straps and trimming the top bar with a reciprocating saw. What are your recommendations for fixing this?

A simple fix is to put another pole between the gate and the existing post. This will help stabilize it and keep the gate from swinging too far.
For a temporary fix that could last you a while, try using a treated 2x6 and some plumber's tape. Just make sure to use exterior screws. If you want a more permanent solution, consider buying a wider gate or properly resetting that post and adding chain link, but that will involve more work!
