How Can I Sharpen Knives Without Using Leather?

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about getting started with carving, but I'm a bit confused about sharpening my knives without a leather strop. Is a whetstone going to be enough for this? Also, are there any vegans here with suggestions for alternatives? Thanks a bunch!

Check this out: some folks use seatbelt web straps as a strop with honing compound on it. It's a solid option for straight razors and can be adapted for knives too.

I've seen some experts use just compound on a piece of MDF. It's really effective since MDF doesn’t have much give, so it won’t mess with your bevel as much as softer materials might.

You can totally use denim! Anything textured that can hold onto stropping compound works pretty well. It's a great substitute for leather if you're looking for something vegan-friendly.
