How Can I Simplify Plant Care During a Stressful Time?

Hey everyone, I'm really struggling with my potted plants lately and could use some advice. I live on the 3rd floor of a balcony, and with everything going on—starting a new job for health insurance, my dad being in and out of the hospital, and taking care of my autistic brother—I'm feeling overwhelmed. My plants are not doing well in the Florida heat, and I can't keep up with watering, dealing with pests, or addressing the hydrophobic soil. I'm looking for simple tips to make caring for them easier during this stressful time. I know I need to repot some, and I'm wondering if there's a type of mulch that could help retain moisture without harming them. Any support or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Try using ice cubes directly on the soil—they melt slowly and can help with that hydrophobic issue. Another method is to place your pots in a shallow tray with water so they can soak it up over a day or two. Also, is there a chance your brother could help with plant care? Even just a bit would lighten your load!

That’s a clever idea! I’ve done the bottom watering thing too, and it really helps when you’re strapped for time.

Putting shade cloth over your plants can really help reduce their water needs while you’re busy. You gotta do what you can, and sometimes that means simplifying things a bit!

Focus on the plants that are most important to you and let go of the ones that are easier to replace, like annuals. It’s okay to accept that you can’t do everything right now. If some plants die, remind yourself that you’re prioritizing family and your health. You deserve grace during this tough time!

Consider gifting a few plants to friends or neighbors who might want to help out. You could also use mulch to hold moisture better, and glass watering bulbs work well too. They can reduce the amount of care needed while you handle everything else going on.
