How can I smooth out my wood finish after applying polyurethane?

I'm wrapping up my woodworking project and I've already stained and applied a top coat, but the surface feels rough. I noticed that light sanding creates a white residue from the oil-based polyurethane. Would using paste wax to polish the wood help eliminate the white powder?

It’s common to see that white powder with poly. You might just need to wipe it down with a tack cloth and then apply another coat of poly, especially since a couple of layers can help smooth it out. Two coats are fine, but three really is better.
