How Can I Soundproof My Room Without Losing Privacy?

So, I just moved into a new house with my family, and my new room is directly above my mom's. The problem is that my room echoes a lot, and even talking quietly, she can hear me from downstairs—especially through the vent. I'm 18, and I enjoy gaming and chatting with friends online, but my mom has been overhearing my conversations, which is super uncomfortable. I want to soundproof my space without covering the vents, as they are necessary for temperature control. I was thinking about acoustic panels, but I don't want my walls to look like a sound studio. Any creative suggestions on how to manage this situation?

One option you might want to consider is using a pre-filter for your vent. It won't block sound completely, but it can help a bit. You could also invest in a white noise generator; it drowns out background sounds and can be super effective. Place it near the vent or even in your mom's room to mask what you’re saying.

Playing some light jazz down the vent could be a fun way to cover up your conversations! It’s a quirky idea, but it might just create a nice atmosphere while you chat.
