My neighbor's yard is in pretty bad shape – most of their grass is gone, leaving dirt and mud behind. With all the heavy rain this year, not only is water flowing through our shared fence, but it's also bringing in a lot of dirt, almost like beach sand. I'm considering building a French drain, but I'm worried that it would clog with dirt. Another idea I had was to put up a retaining stone wall along the edge to block the dirt while allowing water to pass. What do you think about my plans? My zoysia grass is taking a hit, and I need to figure out what to do.

You might want to rethink the drainage solution. A properly constructed French drain can actually handle dirt without clogging, especially if you use PVC piping, which makes it easier to clean. But also, have you thought about your fence? Maybe build a new one over the retaining wall to reinforce it.

I feel you on the cost! It's frustrating to think you could avoid all this expense if your neighbor just took care of their lawn.
