How Can I Stop My Cat from Flushing the Toilet?

Asked By qwerty123! On

My cat keeps flushing the toilet no matter what I try! I've always kept the lid down, but he somehow manages to reach the handle and flush it anyway. I've heard that the movement of the water is what attracts him, but I'm not sure if that's the case here since the lid is down unless the toilet is in use. I'm wondering if there's a special lever I can get that requires lifting instead of pushing, or a way to modify the handle so he can't flush it. Has anyone dealt with this before?

You might want to search for a baby lock designed for toilet levers. These can prevent your cat from pushing down the flush handle, and they’re relatively inexpensive. I think that might be just what you need to keep your bathroom escapades in check!

I never thought of that, but it sounds like a solid solution!

One of the simplest solutions is to just keep your bathroom door closed! It might seem obvious, but it really does work. If that's not an option, consider using some wood or something to block the handle area, so the cat can't reach it as easily. I get that you want to avoid a closed door with kids around, but it could save a lot of hassle.

Yeah, closing the door is definitely the easiest fix, but I understand it might not work for everyone.

If you're looking to change the flushing mechanism entirely, swapping your current handle for a push button model could be a great choice. Those are usually harder for cats to manipulate. Also, someone mentioned trying double-sided tape on the handle—it might just annoy your cat enough to keep him away!

That's an interesting idea! I'll give that a shot on my toilet.
