How Can I Stop My Dog from Eating My Plants?

Hey everyone! So, my dog has been a bit of a handful lately and has taken a liking to my garden plants. He's already wrecked a five-year-old clematis and a brand new rose bush in just a few months. I know I plan to install a dwarf fence eventually, but in the meantime, I'm looking for some practical tips to keep him from munching on my plants without having to put him on a lead every time he goes outside. Any suggestions?

I've had similar struggles! I used galvanized mesh around the base of my plants until they were sturdy enough to handle a little roughhousing. Plus, spiky roses can deter them since dogs generally don't like to chew on thorny plants. It's worth a try!

Haha, my dog loves chewing on hawthorn and roses too! It really doesn’t make sense sometimes.

Oh, I feel your pain! My springer was a total muncher too. We started by putting up chicken wire around the areas he loved to dig in. After a few months, we could take it down, and now he knows where he shouldn’t go. If he strays, I just say, 'out of the garden!' He also takes out his frustration on my plants if he feels ignored. Keeping him in a play area helps a lot!

I see what you mean. I think my dog has tantrums too when I’m busy. Chicken wire sounds like a solid plan, even if it’s not the prettiest solution.
