I recently bought a vintage Stanley No. 4 plane, and it worked perfectly right after I got it. However, after letting it sit for two weeks, I noticed some rust starting to form on the bottom and the edge of the blade. The humidity in my basement is around 50-55%. What steps should I take to prevent further rusting?

One effective method is to light oil or wax the plane. Just grab some soft cloth and rub it into the metal to create a protective layer against moisture.
Another option is to use gunblue on the plane to help protect it from rust. It’s a good protective coating that many vintage tool enthusiasts swear by.
In addition to applying oil, try not to leave your tools out on the bench for long periods. It’s best to store them in a toolbox or drawers. I personally use an old dresser, and I toss in some desiccant packets to absorb moisture. You can also use a block of camphor, as it sublimates and protects against humidity.
