How Can I Stop Toilet Sounds from Echoing into My Family Room?

Hey everyone! We just moved into our new place, and there's this really annoying issue: whenever someone uses the toilet—especially for peeing—the noise travels clearly into the family room. It becomes super distracting, especially with guests around.

I've attached the floor plan so you can see how close the bathroom is to our living areas, which likely contributes to the sound problem. What can I do to minimize or block this noise? Are there any DIY soundproofing tips, or should I look into a more structural solution? Would things like adding insulation, upgrading the door, or using acoustic panels actually help?

Thanks a bunch for any advice from those who've faced this before!

I'd suggest first checking the wall to see where the sound leaks the most. It could be coming through gaps behind the baseboards or even through electrical outlets. In my case, I added a door sweep to the bottom of our bathroom door, and it made a huge difference in reducing noises traveling down the hall.

Have you thought about an exhaust fan? It might help mask some of the noise if you connect it to the light switch. But just a heads-up, turning it on inside the bathroom won't cover it for those in the family room, so placement may be key here!

Real talk though, unwanted toilet sounds imply there might be some desired ones too... which is just a weird thought to have before coffee! But seriously, have you tried other soundproofing methods?
