How can I store large totes in my basement securely?

I'm looking to better organize my basement, which has exposed joists and drywalled walls. I've got a lot of stuff to put away, and I'm considering using those large 116L totes from Home Depot. I've seen some DIY setups where people hang them from the ceiling using a racking system. My idea was to screw a 2x2 into each joist and then place a 2x4 in the middle, allowing me to space the totes properly and slide them in from one side. Has anyone tried this method, or do you have any suggestions?

While hanging the totes might sound convenient, I wouldn't recommend it. It’s easy to overload those bins, which can lead to safety concerns. A safer option would be to build freestanding shelves and secure them with anti-tip devices to keep everything stable. That way you can avoid making your basement ceiling a storage space.

Mostly the bins will hold decorations and baby clothes, nothing too heavy. Do you still think shelves are better?
