I recently found a piece of bark in a community park that's about 3 feet long with a nice crescent shape. I'm planning to use it as a base for carving—either a chickadee or a lizard, but I'm not sure yet. The bark is solid, but it's a bit flexible since it's not thick. What methods or materials can I use to stiffen or strengthen the bark? I have some polyurethane, but I'm not sure if it just protects the surface without adding any firmness. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried using Minwax Wood Hardener? It's specifically designed for strengthening wood and should work well on bark too. You can find it at most hardware stores. Just make sure to follow the instructions for the best results!
One effective way to strengthen bark is by soaking it in thin superglue. I use this technique for my fishing lures to add durability. It infuses the material, making it much tougher. Just brush it on, and you'll notice a difference! For a piece as large as yours, you might want to break it into smaller sections for easier application. Good luck with your carving!
That sounds pretty useful! When you say 'thin superglue,' do you dilute it? What kind of tool do you use to apply it? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I wasn't aware of this product. I’ll definitely check it out next time I'm at the store!
