I'm moving into a new house where the previous owners converted a two-door garage into a single large door. They removed a center support pillar and didn't adequately reinforce the structure to handle the extra weight, resulting in a sagging header. I'm considering installing a jack post where the support beam used to be and boxing it in to make it look nicer, just to prevent further sagging until I can hire a structural engineer or general contractor for a more permanent solution. Has anyone tackled this issue before or have other suggestions for stabilizing the header?

One option is to jack up the header and then use some kind of steel plate to reinforce it. Definitely recommend getting an engineer or a contractor involved, but the repair can start with the jack and plate if that's feasible. Just remember that fixing it properly is the priority!

I actually like that approach. The last two steps you mentioned are optional if the first steps work out well!
